Ubirajara Guimaraes Bira Almeida – Mestre Acordeon, was born 1943 in Salvador, Bahia. He began CAPOEIRA in 1958 with Mestre Bimba, his path in Capoeira lead him to make his mark with the total involvement of body and soul, ARTE-LUTA.

In 1959 he opened his first academy at his residence in Boa Vista de Brotas and quickly gained a lot of students, mainly those who had been searching for a different approach to Capoeira, something with a requirement of good physical form mixed with values of music and art (body & soul). In 1966 he founded the Grupo Folclorico da Bahia, one of the first groups to perform Capoeira in shows and in 1968, along with Ayrton Neves Moura, Mestre Onca, founded the academia K-poeira in Sao Paulo.

Mestre Acordeon won several Brazilian National Championships in the 1970s. He was one of the pioneers to teach Capoeira in the USA in 1978 introducing it on the West Coast, San Francisco, California.


One of the most regarded personalities in the modern world of Capoeira, he wrote several books about Capoeira, most notably - A Brazilian Art Form (history, philosophy and practise) in 1986 and AGua de Beber, Camara (um bate-papo de capoeira) in 1999. He has also recorded 16 MUSICAL ALBUNS AND CDS such as: Jogo de Dentro, Music of Brazil: Music of Capoeira, Capoeira Bahia, Cantigas de apoeira, and Pedir o Axé.


Nestor Capoeira said: "Bira Acordeon influenced a whole generation of capoeiristas and primarily he gave the example to encourage other masters of capoeira to spread capoeira in Brazil and abroad." In his eclectic carreer, Acordeon also wrote theatrical plays and touch business at the School of Business from the Universidade Catolica da Bahia.


In August 2012, Acordeon is embarked in a bicycle journey from Berkeley, California to Salvador , Bahia, Brazil to commemorate his 70th birthday. Along the way, he will record a CD on the music of the Americas with local cultural elements; finish a boor of reflections on capoeira, and a documentary on how capoeira has influenced the lives of people outside of Brazil. This project has the philanthropic goal to raise fund for the self-sustainability of the the Projeto Kirimure (http://www.projetokirimure.org, a social for kids at risk in the neighborhood of Itapuã in Salvador, supported by Mestre Acordeon's non profit organization http://www.capoeiraarts.foundation.org
